Norwegian Commercial Club of Seattle
Remembering Al Blindheim
Read his obituary here
I remember when we had the Inaugural Flight on SAS from Seattle to Copenhagen, back in 1966.
I invited all the managers and presidents of all the Scandinavian Clubs and organizations in Seattle to be our guests on the first inaugural flight.
Al was then the President of the Norwegian Commercial Club and therefore, was invited. On the inaugural flight, we brought Seattle Mayor Dorm Braman to Bergen and asked him what he thought about a Sister City program with that Norwegian city.
He eventually agreed, as did the Mayor of Bergen, Harry Hansen.
And that is how the Sister City relationship between the two cities began.
On the return flight back from Copenhagen to Seattle, Al and I traveled together and on the flight I told Al that we most likely would have a Sister City agreement between Seattle and Bergen. It was then that I asked Al if he wanted to be the first President. He said he would.
So Al was the first president of The Seattle Bergen Sister Cities organization.
I invited The Mayor of Bergen to come to Seattle and be the Grand Marshall in the 17th of May Parade in Ballard and he did.
Al was a great friend of mine as well as the community and will be missed.
